Shaykh BURHANUDDIN LIFE HISTORY

In any gathering,
in any chance meeting
on the street,
there is a shine,
an elegance rising up.

Today, I recognized
that the jewel-like beauty
is the Presence:
our loving confusion,
the glow in which watery clay
gets brighter than fire,
the One
we call the Friend.

I begged,
“Is there a way into you,
a ladder?”
“Your head is the ladder,
bring it down
under your feet”.

The mind,
this globe of awareness,
is a starry universe
that when you push off with your foot,
a thousand new roads become clear
as you yourself do at dawn,
sailing
through the
Light.

Jalaluddin Rumi

Shaykh Burhanuddin received direct transmission of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order, one of the most authoritative and ancient among the forty traditional existing Sufi Orders. It is known through the ages under different names, like the "School of the Masters of Wisdom", or the "Path of Love".
It derives its name from the great Sufi saint, active in Central Asia, in the area of Bukhara in Uzbekistan, Shah Baha’uddin Naqshbandi (1317-1389), may his secret be sanctified. He was the seventeenth in the direct uninterrupted line of descent originated from the heart of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, through Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, the acknowledged heir of his mystic teachings, instead of Sayyidina Ali, may God be pleased with them, as it is the case for all the other Sufi orders.

The term 'Naqshbandi' etymologically is composed by the two terms 'impression, print' (naqsh) and 'to bind, to fasten' (band), referring to the divine Name that is imprinted in the heart of the disciple. It may happen through one glance of the Shaykh, the master, and through the practise that will keep alive that connection.

Shaykh Burhanuddin used to travel exensively in the East to deepen his studies and to receive the teachings of the Way. He started moving his first steps on the Sufi path when he was very young. At the age of nineteen, after seeing one of his pictures, he decided to invite to his town his future teacher, the Grand Master Maulana Shaykh Nazim al Haqqani, the present world guide of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order and the fortieth in the direct descent line.
When he first met him, he was so overwhelmed by his majesty and power, that he simply fainted in the middle of the street. From that day on he was at his side, accompanying him in his frequent travelling all over the world spreading the Sufi touch of Grace and Love.

In the Sufi tradition when the master sees that the disciple is ready, he puts him through the hardest test: a period of forty days seclusion. Shaykh Burhanuddin underwent his first retreat when he was thirty-five years old.
Under the guidance of the master, the disciple is locked into a tiny cell, and follows an extremely hard practise program in a constant praising state of the Divine, with no pause for forty days, and forty nights. The food is almost in-existing and very little sleep is allowed. This is how he can sharpen and strenghten his determination to reach God, facing and fighting the manifold aspects of his own ego.

I have a secret Lover
around me
that from time to time
sends me
a sacred smell.
I asked him
in my heart:
"Why do you do that?"
And He said:
"This is the only way
I have
to kiss your heart
directly".

You need to become a pen
In the Sun´s hand.
We need for the Earth
to sing
through our pores
and eyes.
The body will again
become restless
Until your soul
paints
all its Beauty
upon the Sky.
